Bitmine’s Buying Spree Nears Finish Line
Bitmine Immersion Technologies, the world’s largest Ethereum treasury company, is set to halt its relentless accumulation of Ether (ETH) as it approaches a self-imposed cap.
The company added another $41 million in ETH last week alone, demonstrating its commitment to the strategy even as it nears its limit. At Wednesday’s price point of $2,580 per token, Bitmine’s holdings are valued at approximately $15.5 billion. This figure underscores the scale of Bitmine’s bet on Ethereum and highlights just how significant its presence has become in the market.
Bitmine’s latest update on Monday showed its ETH holdings at 6,016,414, just 0.1% shy of the 5% supply threshold.
$15.5 Billion Bet Faces Pause
Despite this headline number, context complicates the narrative: Bitmine’s massive ETH position is currently underwater by roughly $4.5 billion in unrealized losses, with Ether trading near $2,559.39 as of October 7, 2026—a far cry from its all-time high of $4,946.05 reached in August 2025.
This means that while Bitmine has been a consistent source of demand during both bullish and bearish periods—accumulating most of its Ether during a prolonged bear market—the company is sitting on significant paper losses for now. Nevertheless, Bitmine still holds $643 million in cash and marketable securities earmarked for potential further purchases, more than twice what would be required to close the gap to its 5% supply target at current prices.
Once Bitmine stops buying, one of Ethereum’s largest weekly inflows will abruptly end.
Market Braces for Loss of Major Bidder
The prospect of Bitmine halting its weekly purchases has not gone unnoticed by traders and analysts alike. For over a year, the company’s regular buying provided a reliable bid under ETH prices—especially during stretches when broader market sentiment was weak and liquidity thin. Now, with just about 100,000 ETH left to acquire before reaching its hard cap, attention turns to how markets might adjust without this steady demand.
It’s uncertain whether other institutional buyers will step up to fill the void left by Bitmine or if the absence of this large-scale accumulation will put downward pressure on prices in the short term. The firm’s accumulation strategy coincided with periods of notable volatility for ETH; however, even as prices rebounded from lows earlier this year, they remain well below last year’s peak.

Tom Lee Sets Clear ETH Cap
In public remarks at TOKEN2049 and previous interviews—including one with Bankless in August—Tom Lee has reiterated that Bitmine will not exceed 5% ownership of Ethereum’s circulating supply at this stage. He did leave open a window for revisiting this cap in 2027 but emphasized that no further accumulation would occur before then.
This disciplined approach stands in contrast to some competitors who have shifted strategies midstream or responded reactively to price swings. Instead, Bitmine has stuck to its plan even as its position moved into deep unrealized loss territory—a sign both of conviction and risk tolerance uncommon among public companies managing digital assets at such scale.
Why It Matters: Supply Dynamics Enter New Phase
Bitmine’s exit from the buy side changes the framework for Ethereum market structure. With one less major accumulator active each week, liquidity providers and speculators may need to recalibrate expectations about support levels and volatility. As reported by decrypt.co, Bitmine is currently just shy of its target with holdings representing about 4.9% of all ETH outstanding—a concrete signal that change is imminent.
Whether other large players are prepared—or willing—to take up where Bitmine leaves off remains an open question. For now, all eyes are on how Ethereum responds when one of its most consistent institutional buyers steps aside after nearly eighteen months of uninterrupted accumulation.
Key points still in play
Bitmine will halt its weekly Ethereum purchases once its holdings reach 5% of ETH’s circulating supply—about 100,000 ETH more than its current 6,016,414 ETH position—so if this threshold is reached in the coming weeks, Bitmine’s steady demand will immediately cease; the exact timing of the final purchase remains unclear.
