Pantera Leads Push Against Deepfakes
The World Foundation, a project originally conceived by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has secured $52.5 million in a fresh funding round aimed at bolstering its digital verification infrastructure.
This latest round follows a significant $135 million private token sale in May 2023, which saw participation from a16z and Bain Capital Crypto. The World Foundation’s stated mission is to combat the growing threat of AI-powered online deepfakes by expanding systems for digital identity verification.
As reported by coindesk.com, the capital injection will specifically target the expansion of World ID—a system that issues digital credentials after users complete biometric scans at dedicated devices called Orbs. With the proliferation of deepfake content and synthetic identities online, the project’s backers are betting that robust proof-of-personhood tools will become essential for both consumers and enterprises navigating an AI-saturated internet.
Strategic Investors Back Human Verification
The locked token sale attracted a roster of major investors, with Pantera Capital taking the lead and Bain Capital Crypto returning after previous rounds. Selini Capital and Susquehanna Crypto also joined this time, signaling growing institutional interest in biometric-based digital identity infrastructure. Each WLD token acquired in this round is subject to a one-year lockup, limiting immediate market impact but signaling long-term commitment from participants.
The WLD tokens sold to investors in this round cannot be traded until June 2025 due to a 12-month lockup period.
On paper, the presence of heavyweight investors suggests confidence in World’s approach; however, regulatory scrutiny remains a persistent challenge. In 2024 alone, authorities in Hong Kong ordered World to halt operations, while courts in Kenya demanded deletion of user biometric data. Brazil banned payments for iris scans associated with the project, Spain moved to pause further data collection, and South Korea levied an $830,000 fine for privacy violations.
It’s unclear how these regulatory headwinds might affect user growth or enterprise adoption.

Orb Devices Hit 18 Million Verified Users
Three years since launch, World has processed more than 475 million ID proofs and enrolled over 39 million people worldwide. Of these, more than 18 million individuals have completed biometric verification using Orb devices—specialized hardware that scans irises to generate non-replicable digital IDs stored on users’ phones. This scale makes World one of the most ambitious attempts at global proof-of-humanity infrastructure to date.
The WLD token itself is currently priced at about $0.37 per coin, with total market capitalization exceeding $1.3 billion. Despite regulatory turbulence in several jurisdictions this year, Grayscale filed for what would be the first U.S.-based ETF tied to WLD tokens just this week—a move watched closely by both crypto insiders and mainstream investors.
For now, World’s network continues to grow: its most recent upgrade positions World ID as a “full-stack proof of human” platform designed not only for consumers but also for enterprise platforms and AI agents seeking reliable identity signals.
What’s at Stake for Digital Trust
With $52.5 million now earmarked for scaling up infrastructure and integrating identity technology into enterprise software and AI systems, the stakes are high for both World Foundation and its new backers. The project is betting that verifiable human identity—anchored in biometrics—will become indispensable as generative AI blurs the line between real users and synthetic actors online.
Yet the path forward is anything but straightforward: technical milestones such as processing nearly half a billion ID proofs demonstrate operational capacity, but ongoing legal challenges highlight unresolved questions around privacy and consent. Will large-scale biometric networks win public trust before regulators clamp down further?
Quick Recap
- •The World Foundation raised $52.5 million in June 2024 via a locked WLD token sale led by Pantera Capital.
- •Over 39 million people have joined the World Network, with 18 million verified by an Orb and 475 million ID proofs processed.
- •All WLD tokens sold in this round are subject to a 12-month lockup, restricting trading until June 2025.
What remains to be seen
It remains unclear how the market will react when the WLD tokens sold in this $52.5 million round—currently subject to a 12-month lockup—become eligible for release, as any significant sell-off at that time could immediately impact WLD’s price and liquidity.
