Metaplanet Bets Big on Nasdaq
Tokyo-listed Metaplanet, one of the world’s largest corporate holders of Bitcoin, is making a decisive move into the American market.
The deal is structured so that after closing, Metaplanet will hold approximately 96% of Super League’s common stock, effectively transforming the American company into its primary U.S. bitcoin treasury vehicle. The newly acquired entity will be rebranded as Superplanet and trade under the ticker SUPA. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026, pending shareholder approval and other customary conditions.
Super League Shares Rocket After News
Super League’s stock price responded rapidly to the announcement, surging by more than 50% in trading volume that spiked from an average 393,000 shares to over 37 million shares on the day of the news. In some reports, the jump was even higher—an 80% leap at one point—demonstrating how sharply markets can react to high-profile crypto deals involving listed companies.
This sudden spike highlights investor appetite for bitcoin-linked equity plays, especially when major corporate holders like Metaplanet are involved.
2,100 Bitcoin Crosses Pacific to US
The 2,100 BTC being deployed represent just under 5% of Metaplanet’s total holdings—which currently stand at 43,000 BTC—making it the third-largest corporate bitcoin holder globally. For context, at today’s BTC price of $64,446 (as per proprietary data), this allocation amounts to roughly $135.3 million earmarked for the U.S. expansion.
Unlike some prior treasury strategies where companies buy new bitcoin for such deals, Metaplanet is utilizing coins already held in its reserves. This distinction matters: it signals confidence in existing assets rather than betting on further accumulation at potentially higher prices. The share count for this transaction was locked as of August 14 and will not adjust even if bitcoin’s price fluctuates before closing—a detail that could become significant given bitcoin’s historical volatility.

Super League Set for Major Rebrand
Once finalized later this year or early next, Super League Enterprise will be renamed Superplanet Inc., reflecting its new role as Metaplanet’s dedicated U.S. bitcoin treasury platform. The company will continue trading on Nasdaq but under a new ticker: SUPA. According to decrypt.co, Metaplanet's stake in Superplanet will be subject to a five-year lock-up period, underscoring its long-term commitment to this cross-border strategy.
Yet there’s an interesting tension here: while Metaplanet is making a bold play for American exposure and control (owning about 95.7% of Superplanet upon closing), it is doing so with only a small fraction of its total BTC stack—suggesting both conviction and caution as it tests the regulatory and market waters stateside.
Why Metaplanet Isn’t Buying New BTC
It’s notable that all 2,100 BTC used in this deal are coming from Metaplanet’s existing treasury rather than fresh purchases from the open market. This approach minimizes slippage (the risk that large buys push prices up) and avoids signaling any short-term bets on further appreciation from current levels near $64,446 per coin. With Bitcoin still trading well below its all-time high of $126,080 reached in October 2025—and showing barely any movement over the past month—this might reflect a more measured outlook by Metaplanet’s management.
The initial investment is valued at $134.6 million according to coindesk.com; however, with share counts fixed and price volatility always a factor in crypto deals, there remains some uncertainty about how both parties might view the transaction if bitcoin swings sharply before Q4 2026 closing.
What could still change
If Super League shareholders do not approve the deal before the expected closing in the fourth quarter of 2026, Metaplanet’s planned U.S. bitcoin treasury platform and its controlling stake in Super League would not be finalized.
