Share Split Targets Smaller Investors

Grayscale’s Zcash ETF (ZCSH) is set to undergo a 3-for-1 forward share split, a move designed to make the fund more accessible to a wider range of investors.

The new shares are scheduled for distribution after the market closes on September 29, with split-adjusted trading beginning before markets open on September 30. Grayscale stated that this maneuver would decrease the price per share while proportionally increasing the number of outstanding shares, effectively lowering the barrier to entry for new participants.

Record Inflows Precede Share Split

Investor interest in ZCSH has been robust since its debut as an ETF on August 25. Grayscale’s product has attracted over $233 million in inflows in less than a month, with $46.6 million entering the fund in a single day and $112 million added on September 8 alone. As of September 17, net assets under management had climbed to about $890 million, nearly tripling from its initial value when it converted from the older Grayscale Zcash Trust, which held $313 million in ZEC at launch.

This rapid growth has come amid heightened volatility and attention around privacy coins, especially as Zcash’s ZEC token spiked sharply during September.

ZEC Rally Drives ETF Restructuring

The timing of the share split coincides with a significant rally in Zcash’s native token. On Friday morning, ZEC reached as high as $1,521 before pulling back slightly—a surge attributed in part to Paradigm co-founder Matt Huang revealing an undisclosed purchase of ZEC and voicing support for its developer fund. This announcement led to a 20% jump in ZEC’s value within just 24 hours, according to cointelegraph.com.

While investor enthusiasm is evident from both price action and inflows, mining competition for ZEC has also hit record highs during this period.

Yet there’s a tension: although the ETF’s assets have soared and accessibility is increasing via the share split, it remains uncertain whether these flows will persist if price momentum slows or if regulatory scrutiny intensifies around privacy coins like Zcash.

ETF Split Set for September 30

For existing holders, the mechanics are straightforward: those listed as shareholders at market close on September 28 will automatically receive two additional shares per each one already owned once markets close on September 29. Trading under the adjusted share count will begin before markets open on September 30, maintaining both ticker (ZCSH) and CUSIP number unchanged. This means investors can continue trading without disruption or need for new account actions.

The split is not expected to impact the overall value of anyone’s holdings; instead, it simply divides existing equity into more units at a lower price point per share—a practice common in traditional equities but still relatively novel among crypto-based ETFs.

Why It Matters: Practical Impact

By lowering the price per share through this forward split, Grayscale aims to attract retail investors who may have been priced out by surging valuations. With net assets approaching $890 million and daily inflows crossing tens of millions of dollars, even small changes in accessibility may affect trading volumes and market depth.

However, while smaller investors may find it easier to participate after September 30, questions remain about long-term demand—especially if ZEC’s recent rally proves short-lived or if broader regulatory headwinds emerge for privacy-focused assets. The headline numbers show strong momentum for now; whether that translates into sustained growth is less clear.

Signals worth watching

If ZCSH shareholders of record at the close of trading on September 28 receive two additional shares per one held as scheduled, split-adjusted trading will begin before the market opens on September 30; any delay or change to this timeline would immediately affect investor access and pricing for Grayscale’s Zcash ETF.
